What is an ultrasound?<\/h3>

An ultrasound uses sound waves to see inside your body. It\u2019s noninvasive and uses no radiation, meaning ultrasound is completely safe for a growing baby and your internal organs.
During an ultrasound, also called sonogram, a technician runs a wand called a transducer over the area to be examined. The transducer delivers high-frequency sound waves into your body.\u00a0
When the sound waves hit an object, they bounce back so that a computer can collect them and create an image.<\/p>

What types of gynecological issues call for an ultrasound?<\/h3>

You may be most familiar with an ultrasound to examine an unborn baby. The image tells the doctors about your baby\u2019s growth, gender, and any possible health concerns.\u00a0<\/p>

    You may undergo an abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound. A transvaginal ultrasound gives the doctors the best view of your uterine lining, interior walls of the uterus, and ovaries. During this type of ultrasound, the technician inserts the sterile transducer into your vagina.
    An abdominal ultrasound is an external test, and the transducer runs across your belly and pelvic area only.<\/p>

    What symptoms indicate the need for a gynecological ultrasound?<\/h3>

    You may need an ultrasound to help diagnose pelvic pain. An ultrasound is also a helpful diagnostic tool in the following cases:<\/p>

    • Abnormal vaginal bleeding<\/li>
    • Unexplained infertility<\/li>
    • Irregular menses<\/li>
    • Suspected ovarian or uterine cancer<\/li>
    • Examination of the endometrium (uterine lining)<\/li><\/ul>

      If the doctor feels a mass or cyst during a pelvic exam, they may order an ultrasound to get a better idea of its location and characteristics.<\/p>

      Of course, you also receive regular ultrasounds during a routine pregnancy. Usually, this is scheduled at 18-20 weeks of gestation.\u00a0<\/p>

      Some women may undergo an ultrasound earlier, before 14 weeks, to check the health and development of the fetus. If your pregnancy is deemed high risk, you may have more frequent ultrasounds.<\/p>
